Winkler Canvas has developed yet another innovative product, this time for the wind energy industry. Contractors for the sector approached Winkler for a custom shelter, designed to prevent adverse weather conditions from interfering with the grout application around the base of wind turbines.
The current method of creating shelters involved many man hours for installation and required multiple tarps and a wooden frame structure. It was nearly impossible to create a weather proof zone wherein to apply the special grout required. Lighting was also an issue. Using the wooden frame structure with hoarding tarps created a dark environment and additional lighting was required to operate safely and effectively.
With these concerns in mind, Winkler designed the Wind Turbine Grout Tent, which is extremely easy to install, and creates a weatherproof work area that allows for the natural light to transmit through the fabric. A high heat silicone fabric venting system has been implemented that allows external heat sources to be operated outside of the shelter, creating that necessary warm and dry environment within.
The Wind Turbine Grout Tent uses an anchoring system with poles and tie-off hardware, making it much easier to adjust in rough terrains and uneven surfaces. The tent package is compact and extremely versatile for transporting and storage.
Fastening the tent around the turbine itself was the biggest design challenge. During the grout application and curing process, the grout cannot be exposed to any moisture or it has to be removed at an extremely expense cost. To create a 100% waterproof seal, a custom belt and ratchet system was designed that incorporated Velcro fasteners around the shaft of the turbines. This system allows the installer to safely apply the product without fear of costly rework.
The Winkler Wind Turbine Grout Tent comes in three standard sizes. Nacelle covers are also available upon request for turbine generator maintenance. Winkler Canvas is excited to work with this growing industry and looks forward to developing additional products in the near future.
